What is FDNY C-14 Certificate Of Fitness
Non-production laboratories have been regulated by the Fire Code and Fire Department rules since 1966. The 1966 regulation followed the use and storage of chemicals in college, university, research, hospital, and commercial laboratories, required such laboratories to operate under a certificate of fitness (C-14) holder’s supervision.
A. Old Laboratories (prior to July 1, 2008) vs. New Laboratories (on or after July 1, 2008) In July of 2014, the City of NYC adopted a new Fire Code. Similar to the previous code, the new code addressed storage and use of chemical in laboratories, and with some changes, incorporated provisions of National Fire Protection Association Standard (NFPA) 45, “Fire Protection for Laboratories Using Chemicals.”.
The good news is that the NFPA Standard 45 is applicable TO ALL non-production labs, grade schools and high schools. similar to the old regulation 2014 NYC Fire Code mandates ALL non-production labs must be run by a holder of certificate of fitness. And it covered the situation with respect to laboratories which WERE NOT previously obligated to cover there laboratories under a certificate of fitness holder.
